Maybe your husband is a good man.

Maybe he works hard, loves his family, makes you laugh, fixes things around the house, or shows love in his own way.

But romance?

Chile. 😂

Maybe you've been waiting for the surprise flowers that never arrive. The date he planned completely on his own. The reservation you didn't have to suggest first. The little “Get dressed, I have something planned for us” moment.

And after a while, you might start wondering:

What do you do when your husband isn't romantic?

Here's something I've been thinking about lately: What if you stopped waiting?

Not necessarily on your marriage. Not on love. Not on your husband.

What if you simply stopped waiting for another person to give you permission to make your own life feel special?

Does Romance Have to Come From Your Partner?

I don't think it does.

We usually think of romance as something another person gives us: flowers, candlelit dinners, weekend getaways, surprise dates and thoughtful gifts.

But there's another kind of romance that doesn't get talked about nearly enough.

The way you treat your own life.

You can buy yourself flowers because they're beautiful.

You can wear the dress you've been saving even though nobody planned a date.

You can light the candles on a Friday evening just because you made it through the week.

You can order your favorite dessert, play your favorite music, pour something delicious into the pretty glass instead of the everyday cup and actually enjoy your own company.

You don't have to wait for Valentine's Day, your birthday or an anniversary.

Sometimes “I wanted to” is the occasion.

What Does It Mean to Romanticize Your Own Life?

Romanticizing your life isn't about pretending everything is perfect.

The laundry is still there. The bills didn't magically disappear. Somebody probably left a cup somewhere it doesn't belong. 😂

It's about noticing that your life is happening right now.

You don't have to wait until you lose weight, make more money, take the perfect vacation, have the perfect relationship or reach some imaginary future version of yourself before you start enjoying it.

Make ordinary moments feel intentional.

Put fresh flowers on the kitchen table.

Make yourself breakfast and actually sit down to eat it.

Take yourself somewhere you've wanted to go.

Get dressed up for absolutely no reason.

Read outside.

Have a slow morning.

Take yourself to lunch.

Book the experience you've been wishing someone else would surprise you with.

That's romanticizing your life.

What If I Feel Weird Doing Things By Myself?

You might at first.

Especially if you've spent years thinking special experiences are supposed to happen because someone else planned them for you.

But think about this:

If you saw another woman sitting outside with flowers, a beautiful drink and a book, would you think she looked lonely?

Probably not.

You'd probably think, She looks peaceful.

There is a huge difference between being alone and enjoying your own company.

And you don't have to do everything alone either. Invite your sister. Call your daughter. Get your girlfriends together. Turn an ordinary weekend into something worth remembering.

Romance and beauty don't belong exclusively to couples.

Can I Book a Picnic Just for Myself?

Absolutely.

At The Picnic Loft, we love romantic experiences, but romance doesn't have to mean waiting for someone else to plan something for you.

A beautiful picnic can be a date with your partner, but it can also be a moment you create for yourself.

You could celebrate your birthday.

You could celebrate getting a promotion.

You could celebrate starting over.

You could celebrate surviving a difficult season.

Or you could celebrate absolutely nothing.

Bring your favorite book. Put on an outfit that makes you feel good. Take pictures. Listen to music. Sit somewhere beautiful.

And if you'd rather bring your favorite people along, turn it into a girls' day.

You don't need a proposal, anniversary or special occasion to deserve a beautiful experience.

What If I Still Want My Husband to Be More Romantic?

Romanticizing your own life doesn't mean your needs in your relationship don't matter.

If romance is important to you, it's okay to communicate that.

And sometimes our partners don't understand exactly what we're asking for. “Be more romantic” can mean a hundred different things.

Maybe what you actually want is:

“I'd love for you to plan one date without me having to organize it.”

Or:

“Flowers for no reason make me feel really special.”

Or:

“I don't need anything expensive. I just want you to surprise me sometimes.”

That's a much clearer conversation.

But here's the important part:

Your ability to enjoy your life doesn't have to sit in the waiting room until somebody else changes.

You can communicate what you need from your relationship and create beautiful moments for yourself.

Both things can be true.

What Are Some Simple Ways to Start Romanticizing My Life?

Start ridiculously small.

Buy the grocery-store flowers.

Use the good perfume on a regular Friday.

Drink your morning coffee outside.

Put music on while you're getting dressed.

Take yourself somewhere pretty.

Order dessert.

Book the hotel room.

Schedule the picnic.

Watch the sunset.

Take the picture.

Wear the outfit.

Stop saving everything beautiful for some future special occasion.

Because one day you'll realize something:

These ordinary days were the special occasions.

You Don't Have to Wait for Romance

Maybe your husband isn't naturally romantic.

Maybe your partner doesn't think about flowers and surprise dates the way you do.

And maybe you're still hoping they'll become a little more intentional.

That's okay.

But while you're waiting for somebody else to bring more romance into your life, don't forget that you live there too.

Create some of it yourself.

Buy the flowers.

Plan the afternoon.

Invite the girls.

Take yourself somewhere beautiful.

And every once in a while, celebrate yourself for absolutely no reason at all.

Because “just because” is a perfectly good reason. 💕
